Armed Killer Murderbots: The Good Side!

While I think we are still a long way away from having autonomous killer robots trudging around the world waiting for Skynet to become self-aware, it has been a somewhat big topic lately. This is mostly due to people, justifiably, freaking out over the thought of remorseless killing machines becoming the go to move for everything from major wars, to crime prevention, to taking care of people who cut in long lines and then act like you are an asshole for pointing it out.

Ok, that last example is, more truthfully, my personal use for an ED-209. I’m a petty dick when it comes to lines.

Finally, a Whiskey themed post.

So recent news has finally given me a reason to do something that makes sense for this blog, at least on the surface. We are a few posts in on something called The Whiskey Monologues and we are finally talking about Whiskey instead of just using it as a fuel for the haphazard writing here. Specifically I am talking about the recent news that Fireball brand whiskey has been banned in Europe!

Well, not really banned.

And not in all of Europe.

What I would like to see in a female superhero movie (fine, what I DON’T want to see)

I had a conversation with a friend a while back about a potential Wonder Woman movie. The conversation evolved into what we would or wouldn’t hope to see in a movie with a strong female lead. We both thought it was about time we got more of those, if for nothing else than diversity making things more interesting. We have had male dominated hero movies for a while and while I have enjoyed them, and still will, we could use to mix it up for many reasons. I am pretty sure by the time “Expendables 3” is done we will have officially found the need to kill off “bad acting guy with big muscles shoots stuff… and stuff gets blowed up”. At least for a while….

Some of this comes from my still lingering malaise about the character of Rogue in the X-Men movies. I didn’t really read comics until a college room-mate pretty much forced me to, but I have read a good chunk of the Marvel X-men focused comics, and I was anxiously awaiting the bad ass character Rogue when the movie came out. There was a little bit of disappointment to find that instead of a super strong, flying, powers stealing woman who had some deep demons (because in comics everyone has deep demons. Dr. Phil would have committed suicide long ago in the Marvel Universe) she was a frightened, confused and kind of weak character who just wanted to touch the boy she liked. I understand it worked for the character in the movie, I mean being a teenager sucks, but being a teenager that had what has to be the worst first kiss in history, is infinitely worse. She never really did fill out in to the character I had remembered from the comics though, and that always bothered me a bit. That is probably the historical start of this list in my head. Of course, I am a possibly, probably, drunken fat guy saying this, so maybe my opinion will be deemed meaningless. With that Volkswagen sized grain of salt being given out, here are some of the things I would (ok really wouldn’t) want to see in a female led superhero movie:

My Very Definitive Stance on Abortion.

Note: A lack of posts in the past few weeks has been due to a lot going on, which left me no time to write or post. I will be back next week with something, most likely my opinion on what is happening in Ferguson, MO. I think I may have a fairly nuanced opinion on that, which made me think of this Best Of* gem from 2007. Please note that even in 2007 making an “I Am Sam” reference was not timely, you aren’t missing out on some sort of cutting edge joke, so don’t feel left out. Also, if you are offended at all, then do not worry, that’s normal. If you are not offended even a little bit, then please let me know as I think I may have to go Highlander on you, as there can be only one…

Without further ado, here is my in depth, specific and definitive analysis of a topic that is just as hot button now as it was 7 years ago…

ABORTION

Dasani Bottled Water Will Kill You! (if you drink about a thousand bottles a day)

While perusing the internet the other day, I came across this article, from a health and nutrition website, which linked into another article on the same subject. According to these articles every time I stop at the local store and grab a bottle of Dasani water, something that has been happening frequently as its summer but I am stubbornly refusing to use A/C, I am gambling with my life.

Dasani water is going to kill me.

I lost inches off my waist in just one blog post! Find out how!

So I recently had a friend send me some info on her new weight loss program, where she lost something like 13 pounds in 8 days. I was impressed and happy for her, but things got a little weird. Initially she  told me it was a better diet, some cardio and “natural products”. When pressed, all I was given was a website that had some testimonial videos on it but no real information on the product or even how to buy it.

Right away my Skeptey Senses were tingling.

The First Amendment may not be for you.

Due to pending obligations this Independence Day weekend, I am going to run an old bit I had written a long time ago, in 2007. I think the general idea keeps but the references may be a bit dated. In case you have a very short memory, here are the pertinent bits:

George Bush and Dick Cheney were President and Vice President, respectively.

Whoopi Goldberg was not always the Last Stand Survivor of hosting The View she is today. She once also sold Slim-Fast, and did a whole bunch hugely grossing movies and TV shows in the 80’s and 90’s (in case that sort of thing is important to you.)

The Dixie Chix were a fairly popular country/pop band. I could not name a song of theirs now, or when I wrote this, to save my life though.

Ward Churchill was a college professor who made the news rounds by being almost entirely for the 911 attacks on America, which was a less than popular opinion, but the most amazing Pundit FoodTM I had seen until actually reading Supreme Court decisions stopped becoming a thing people do.

That’s about it, so please enjoy the semi coherent ramblings of those bygone days of 2007:
